Harriet Clay (nee Knight) was a journalism student in 2006 (BA)

"Joining Rhodes in 2006 was a life long dream fore filled as both my parents attended the university in the 80’s, my father in the Law department and my mother in the Fine Art department (Dominic the art professor when I was there, was a student when my parents attended, as was prof Peter Vale). So I felt it was a sort of homecoming. The department was new and had cool art installations. At my first lecture our Journ prof asked us why we wanted to study this particular subject, but without using the word passion… it was a tricky hour as journalism had always been a ‘passion’ of sorts.

It was new and had a good buzz, it was more intimidating than exciting.

I came to study at Rhodes due to my parents having gone there, but I was keen to join an already infamous department.

It was busy, and there were lots of assignments not just for journ, so everything went by as a bit of a blur. I remember getting a flat tyre in the car park of the Media Matrix and having half the department help me change it. I also remember feeling really cool with our key cards scanning to let us into certain parts of the department. Made us feel like secret agents.

What do you remember about your curriculum?

I remember staying one holiday to complete an investigative journalism course which was amazing.

What was your specialisation?

Radio

Do you carry the department with you or is it now just a distant memory?

Very much, I'm still in contact with the Marketing and Media department at Rhodes where I got my first internship while my husband was completing his Hons. I am an active member of the Dragon Writers group on Facebook which is made up of 100s of Rhodes Alumni from the Journ department keen on the publishing world.

I worked as a producer for SAfm on the woman’s show Otherwise and worked at SABC for a short stint before moving to London. I then began my own blog and focused on my first passion, writing. The Communications and Marketing department have copies of my first 3 children’s books and since sending those through to the Alumni bookcase, I have written 3 more. The latest being, A Journey Through Everlasting Time, based on the Anglo Boer War. I now teach English at one of the largest private boys school in London and am writing my 6th novel.

What stands out to you in your memory?

Making friendships that will last a life time.
